Happy Chinese New Year - The Year of the Snake!
In China the new year, or Spring Festival, is celebrated according to the lunar calendar, which is marked by the first new moon that appears between January 21 and February 20 each year. It includes a series of customs and traditions, festivities, fireworks, and quality time with family.
This year, 2025, is the Year of the Snake, according to the Chinese zodiac, that appoints an animal for each year in a 12-year cycle. The snake is traditionally seen as the most tenacious of the 12 zodiac animals. The year is associated with rebirth, growth and flexibility. People born in the Year of the snake are seen as intelligent and positive. Other years of the snake were in 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2013.
As a proud born and bred South African, I studied and worked in the USA for 7 years, after which I was very fortunate to study and work in China for more than a decade. Just like in South Africa during new year celebrations, Chinese New Year is synonymous with family (and friends) time, connections, and loads of food! It is a time to take stock of the past year, and to look forward with expectation to the year that lies ahead.
My China Link kicked off officially in 2025. There are great expectations and excitement for what lies ahead. We are a community of experts, colleagues, and clients looking ahead to the prospects, possibilities, and challenges of the new year. Our mission is to build lasting relationships, foster trust, and cultivate opportunities to grow both South African and Chinese businesses.
As the inaugural blog post for My China Link, it is fitting that this coincides with the start of the Chinese New Year 2025. This season symbolizes growth, and together, we’ll grow stronger.
